It’s no secret that I have my own therapist. Over the years, I’ve used therapy to help with work/life balance, grief, and managing postpartum anxiety. My past therapists have all been white women, who have had the knowledge and drive for their role; however, I have always lacked that South Asian perspective and lens. It feels silly for me to highlight this since my practice is, amount other populations, geared specifically towards South Asian women.
Recently, I decided to shake things up a bit. It’s not easy finding an Indian therapist who provides services to those of us in the midwest. I used SouthAsianTherapist.org (I’m on here too!) to help me find someone who I felt comfortable with and who was also licensed in Wisconsin. It’s an amazing site and totally worth checking out if you are also South Asian.
Here is a little list of what I’ve personally found enlightening, eye opening, and helpful in therapy with my new therapist:
An emphasis on family.
The integration of the nuances of biculturalism and how that can effect one’s mental health.
The ability to slowly highlight and work through both racial trauma and acculturation trauma.
The ability to reference Indian customs, themes, and holidays without having to go into detail/provide an in depth description.
If you live in the Wisconsin or Minnesota area, identify as a bicultural South Asian woman, and are curious about therapy that had the above benefits- reach out to me today through my website (www.statzpsychological.org) to set up a consultation today!
